Tomekichi Homma Elementary

The school is located in Steveston, at the mouth of the Fraser River. A recent effort was made to build a food garden, a teaching garden maybe, and though school is out for the summer, the tending continues. A staff member shared with me some of its potatoes; when I first visited the garden, I saw this sign outside one of the school's exterior doors.

Guidebook to Vancouver Island (1973)

I saw this on the discount shelf outside of Carson Books yesterday. Kinda stopped me in my tracks, as book covers sometimes do. Such a simple design. The spine is even tighter.

Checked out the Table of Contents and noticed mention of off-Island locations. Alert Bay (on Cormorant Island) had a page to itself.

The year this guidebook was published is the same year Claude Levi-Strauss visited Alert Bay, where he spoke with Ron Martin, a Nuu-Chah-Nulth carver, on the topic of D'sonoqua.

Yes, but the eyes, Levi-Strauss kept saying of D'Sonoqua. Are they really so pronounced?

Where There's Smoke, There's Fire

And where there's haze, there's smoke.

Right now much of southern B.C. is engulfed in a particulate-filled haze, but because it is the result of smoke from California, Oregon and Washington forest fires, it doesn't rate much interest in Canada's newspaper of record. Not like, say, a U.S. government unilaterally imposing trade tariffs on Canadian lumber and soft woods.
