Shuvinai Ashoona's
Greenlandic Man (2016) (above) appears next to her
Untitled (Birthing Scene) (2013) at the VAG's
Shuvinai Ashoona: Mapping Worlds exhibition. I asked the artist why the two works were placed next to each other, and she told me. (Her response will appear in the April/May, 2020 issue of
Preview.)
Another question I asked Shuvinai concerned the recurrence of kelp in her pictures, not only in the landscape, but in portraits like
Greenlandic Man.
"I draw the kelp because they keep coming back," she said.
