Translation within the Anglosphere is generally restricted to spellings (labour in the UK and Canada; labor in the U.S. and in the spelling of an Australian political party of the same name). But there are exceptions. One of them is the tendency to "translate" foreign sums into U.S. currency.
Such was the case when readers noted the Chan Family's recent 40 million dollar gift to the Vancouver Art Gallery's capital campaign towards a new purpose-built building (to be called the Chan Centre for the Visual Arts) was reported as 30 million dollars in the U.S.-based Artforum.
